Gradient domain grading · OFX · DaVinci Resolve

Grade the edges.
Solve the picture.
No halos.

Gradient Domain Grading Tools is a bundle of four OFX tools that work on the edges and gradients of your image, then solve the whole frame back together. Contrast, colour and selective moves stay clean, with no halos, and it's led by GD DRT Pro: a full display render built on that same solve.

What's gradient domain grading?

Change the edges, not the pixels.

Most grading tools push each pixel around on its own. Local contrast tools like sharpening and clarity work by blurring a copy of the image and leaning on the difference, and that's where the glow around every hard edge comes from: the halo.

These tools come at it from the other side. They read the edges and gradients of the picture, how fast it changes from one spot to the next, and do the grade there. Then they solve the whole frame back into an image that matches those new edges as closely as it can.

Because every edge is solved together with its neighbours, a contrast push can't spill over one side of an edge. That's why the moves stay clean, with no halos, which is something curves, unsharp mask or a clarity slider just can't do.

∇
Read the edges

The tool builds a map of every gradient in the frame: big tonal edges, fine texture, colour transitions.

±
Grade the edges

Boost fine detail, tame the big jumps, move a colour, or run a full display render, all on the gradients.

∫
Solve it back

The whole frame is solved at once into a picture that fits the new edges. Nothing gets pasted on top.

The headliner · GD DRT Pro

A display render built on the solve.

GD DRT Pro takes your camera log straight in and hands a monitor-ready picture out. Pick your Input Curve and Input Gamut (Linear, DaVinci Intermediate and common camera log curves and gamuts), then your Output Gamut (Rec.709, P3-D65 or Rec.2020). No CSTs in front of it. The look gets rendered through the gradient solve, so it shapes the picture without dragging halos in.

Main Look · Film Emulsion Controls

Records: how the picture gets built

GD DRT Pro builds colour the way film's rules work, not by copying any one stock. The picture runs through layered dye records and comes back together subtractively. You steer it from Film Emulsion Controls:

  • Record Crosstalk softens saturation through the mids.
  • Highlight Crosstalk pulls bright colours toward white sooner.
  • Interimage pushes colours apart and deepens saturation.
  • Dye Impurity mutes and darkens saturated colours.
  • Density Range gives richer, darker colour.

Main Look up top has the broad strokes: Emitter Bulb, Global Density, Global Saturation, RGB Drive, CMY Drive, Contrast, Mid Grey Shift, and RGB and CMY rotates.

Presets

Three looks to start from, plus your own

Open the Presets drawer and pick a starting look: Balanced Modernity (where every new node starts), Faded Glory or Silver Screen. Default Settings takes you back to a clean slate.

Like what you built? Name it in Preset Name and hit Save. Export writes the look to a file you can hand to someone else, and Import loads one in and applies it. Tweak a preset and the menu marks it (Customized) so you always know you've moved off the original.

Emitter Adjustments · Emitter Trims

White Mode

The emitter is the light the whole picture thins out toward. White Mode sets how bright that white is in one click:

  • SDR is 100 nits, with Diffuse White off.
  • SDR as HDR 203 Nits Diffuse puts the emitter at 406 nits with Diffuse White at 0.5, so the body of the picture sits at 203 nits and the top slice climbs to 406.
  • Custom kicks in the moment you move White Intensity (nits) or Diffuse White by hand.

Scorched sets how much of the top of the range punches through to full white, and Bleach sets whether that slice keeps its own hue or takes the emitter's.

Input Output Config

Display Encode & Reference Monitor

Display Encode covers SDR and HDR deliverables: Gamma 2.4 (the default), Gamma 2.2, Gamma 2.6 (DCI), PQ (ST 2084), HLG, plus Linear/Custom and Linear/HDR.

Reference Monitor tells GD DRT Pro what you were looking at while you built the look. Set it once and switching encodes keeps the light you graded, instead of the picture jumping every time you change deliverables.

Film Textures (Beta)

Grain & halation by gauge

Pick a film gauge and the texture follows: Grain and Halation each offer Off, 65mm, 35mm or 16mm.

  • A smaller gauge gets enlarged more to fill the frame, so its grain reads larger and more visible.
  • Grain Strength runs 0 to 2. 1 is the gauge's calibrated level.
  • Halation is the warm glow film puts around bright highlights. A smaller gauge gives a wider, stronger halo.
Per Hue Trims

Six hues, each with its own drawer

Red, Yellow, Green, Cyan, Blue and Magenta each get Hue Rotate, Saturation, Density, Drive, Range, Tone Focus, Tilt and Dye Twist. Twist Primaries and Twist Secondaries bend the path a colour takes from shadow to highlight, like a dye shifting hue as it gets thicker or thinner.

Because it all runs through the solve, even a big hue move stays clean at the edges.

Input Output Config · Grade Input

Bring your own grade along

GD DRT Pro has a second input. Connect a graded branch of the same shot and that grade gets re-rendered through the gradient solve ahead of the look. Grade Texture gives texture back where your grade crushed or clipped it, while keeping the grade's tone and colour. Grade Smooth caps how far the grade can amplify an edge, which tames lifted shadow noise.

Also in the bundle

Three more tools on the same solve.

Everything here installs as one bundle and shows up in Resolve's OFX list under Grading Tools - Dec. 18 Studios. The solve-based tools have a Quality setting (Draft, Standard, High) so you can work fast and render clean.

Local contrast · detail

Field Sharpen GD Pro

The original GradientField tool. Halo-free local contrast and tone compression.

BeforeDetail 1.0
Before / after Field Sharpen at 1.0Drag to compare

Detail boosts the fine gradients for micro-contrast and clarity with no halo. Detail Scale sets where fine texture ends and real edges begin, and Detail Floor is a noise gate that keeps grain and sensor noise out of the boost, so the image doesn't flutter in motion.

Tone Compress goes the other way on the big jumps: it lifts shadows and tames highlights without flattening the local detail inside them. Work in Linear or Log density, and switch Detail Engine between Classic and Scale-Space.

The HDR Restore drawer has two handy fixes. Deband smooths banded ramps back into clean gradients while real edges and texture pass untouched. Expand Stops gives squashed highlights their contrast back and lets them land above 1.0, handy for HDR delivery.

Why it matters

Clarity without the glow. You can push detail hard and the edges stay edges.

Display render · lab

GD DRT Experiments

Formerly Color Vector GD Pro. Six colour vectors and the full display render, all exposed.

GD DRT Experiments moves colour as six vectors, Red through Magenta, each with Hue Rotate, Saturation, Density, Range, Tone Focus and Tilt. It's halo-free and temporally stable, so there's no breathing from frame to frame.

It carries a built-in display render with the whole tone scale out in the open: Contrast, Pivot, Peak Luminance (nits), HDR Grey Lift, Highlight Purity Rolloff, Gamut Compress with per-colour reach, and Creative White Temp / Tint. Camera log in, monitor-ready out, no CSTs needed.

Razzle Dazzle lives here too. It puts real distance between diffuse white and the bright stuff, so practicals, fire, speculars and windows burst out above it toward the peak of the display, still with texture at the top instead of a flat white wall. Strength at 0 turns it off.

Why it matters

If you want every knob on the render in front of you, this is the one.

Selective grading

Color Slicer GD Pro

Edge-aware selections that snap to the object.

Color Slicer GD Pro is the gradient domain take on Color Slicer. Its Structure Lock lets the selection flow through smooth areas and stop at real colour edges, filling holes and snapping to contours, then Spill Amount lets the surround follow your colour move so nothing looks cut out. There's a Focus Gate and a matte output too.
